BFSS Vice-President presents cheque to IntoUniversity’s Haringey Centre

On 21st March 2012 Professor Richard Aldrich, BFSS Vice-President, visited IntoUniversity’s Haringey Centre to present a cheque for £15,000 on behalf of the BFSS. The Centre offers support to young people aged 7-18 from disadvantaged backgrounds and helps them to achieve educational success and go on to attain a university place or other chosen aspiration. Among the children whom Professor Aldrich met were pupils from Lancasterian Primary School, a former BFSS school in Tottenham.

Celebration of the move of the BFSS Archive to new premises

On 20 February 2012 Brunel University celebrated the move of its Archive, including the BFSS Archive, to new premises close to the University’s Uxbridge Campus (the Old School House, 1 Hillingdon Hill, Uxbridge, UB10 0AA). The Chair and two Trustees (Dr Ian Waitt and Mr Brian York) attended the event along with the Director.

BFSS Chair and Director attend dinner at Windsor Castle hosted by HRH the Prince of Wales to celebrate success of the British Asian Trust and its partners

On 13th February the BFSS Chair, Roger Howarth, and the Director, Imogen Wilde, attended a dinner at Windsor Castle hosted by HRH the Prince of Wales to celebrate the role of donors and partners in helping the British Asian Trust to transform the lives of more than 350,000 poor people across South Asia through education, health and livelihood initiatives. The Chair and Director of BFSS had opportunity to meet HRH the Prince of Wales and tell him about the work of BFSS including the Society’s support through the Trust for the Developments in Literacy project in Pakistan.

BFSS partners with British Asian Trust to support online training for teachers in rural Pakistan

The learning and life chances of some 1,500 poor children in Pakistan’s most isolated rural areas will be improved through a partnership between The British Asian Trust and The British & Foreign School Society. BFSS advertises for Finance Manager

The BFSS is enhancing its internal financial capacity and wishes to appoint a part-time Finance Manager. He/she will work closely with the Director in taking the Society forward to the next stage of its development. Core duties will be to manage the finances of the Society, provide sound financial advice to the Trustees and Director, liaise with investment managers etc and work closely with the Director on analysis of grant applications. Exhibition: Brunel and the Olympics

Brunel University is holding a special exhibition from Tuesday 13 September – Friday 23 September which draws on resources from the BFSS Archive to celebrate the University’s sporting heritage and alumni Olympic and Paralympic success. The exhibition includes photographs, trophies, sports kit and first-hand accounts of sporting experiences. The exhibition is in the Brunel University Council Chamber and is open from 10am to 5pm.

In addition the University’s collection of limited edition Cultural Posters from the 1972 Munich games will be on display in the Beldam Gallery from Monday 12 September - Friday 14 October. This eclectic collection of 27 works has designs by David Hockney, Joseph Albers and Paul Wunderlich and others.

All events are free and there is no need to book.

BBC Radio 4 features the BFSS

On Radio 4 on Tuesday 13th September the “Making History” series included a fascinating piece on the BFSS with particular reference to some remarkable women educationalists – “intrepid travellers” – who travelled to Africa and other parts of the world in the early decades of the nineteenth century to start schools. The programme included interviews with the BFSS archivist Phaedra Casey and with Dr Christina de Bellaigue, Fellow and Tutor at Exeter College Oxford.
